Some people do not wear formal dresses, I know I do not. I like to be different and wear something nice that is still formal and costs less but hate spending hundreds of dollars on a dress that is only going to be worn for a few hours.

Dresses will not be cheap..That you may borrow what size do you wear??

Floor length dresses are a good idea, get your nails done, hair done and and dressed up real nice. With military balls its better to over dress then under.. Take your camera and enjoy!!

hi jenn!

Don't really care all too much about the cost of the dress. Just want to look decent... and Its just really hard for me to find a dress since they will all have to get altered.. I wear a 00. or some 0. and even that still doesnt fit like a glove to me... My bf is the commander of SFAS and I just don't want to embarrass him and of course myself. How about the whole experience? I heard there's a receiving line and all that other stuff... It would be really helpful if you can tell me about your ball... Thanks a BUNCH!

I would make a trip to Raleigh they would have more places to look for dresses. Yes everyone walks through a line to meet yall and shake your hand. Dont worry about embarrassing him you should be fine. I dont know what else to tell you I have been to two balls but they were totally different from each other. If there is anything you want to know let me know.

Hi Rika,
I always have the same problem finding the smaller size dresses. Most stores don't carry below a size 2. But try David's Bridal over on Skibo, because someone told me they do carry the small sizes and will also alter, but I have no experience with them myself.

There is also a formal gown store on Sycamore Dairy and they have a huge variety: http://www.bridalandformalcenter.com/ and carry size 0!

Also, your BF is the commander so your tickets are more expensive (explaining the difference between the $25 and $40 ticket prices).

We have been to quite a few formals over the years and have always had a great time. You will need to participate in the receiving line, but it's just a formality of greeting everyone as they go past you. In the past I have seen some women come to the formals a little under-dressed and they have been a little embarrassed by it. They didn't know/didn't ask and assumed a sun dress would suffice, when most everyone else was in a formal gown. It is a formal occasion and you will be at the head table so dress it up :)

I've only been to one and it was for the Army's birthday. It was pretty boring. lol Wide variety of dress styles. There was a nice dinner and nice conversation with people we knew. I think there were some speeches, and a little dancing. Not much but a little.

We're suppose to be having something for our unit too but so far no info has been put out. It is suppose to be Dec 10th so you'd think they'd at least have ticket prices out.

Recieving line..I think that is where your spouse introduces you to the people in charge? They did something similar when my DH graduated WOCS where my spouses introduced me to so n so. I wouldn't worry about that too much~

Prices vary depending on the unit... lower enlisted, senior enlisted and officers pay different amounts. E4 and below are cheaper.

Seems like everyone is doing their ball in Dec and we had to pay $25.00 a person to cover the cost of food which the last ball we went to the food was lousy...could have went out somewhere and spent less for some decent food.

Anyway, I enjoyed some quality time with hubby without the kids for a couple of hours.

Have fun and good luck.

They told us ours they want E-4 and below to be free. Ok well I was told that because I asked--no official info has been put out, not even location. I don't know the ticket prices but they told my hubby is was mandatory for him to go. That sucks. They did not arrange child care either thru the CDC (which I mean reserve it hourly care on your behalf, we would pay for it still just as a curtesosy). Ours they are having on a THURSDAY evening so using CDC on our own is not an option. Nope makes no sense to me either why they would have it on a Thursday. She said to give Friday off which would not apply to my DH . lol

Every unit is different when it comes to military balls. Everyone has to pay in ours and child care you provide yourself. Ours is not mandatory but due to my husband's rank he does not want anyone to feel he is not a social person plus this gives us some time to ourselves for a couple of hours and I had made my child care arrangements like 2 months ago since they gave us 3 months advanced noticed. Being that I am pregnant I hope the food is good because I hate to get sick at the ball because of lousy food.
